How P&L Is Calculated in Gold Trading

Your profit or loss on any XAU/USD trade is determined by three factors: the price movement in pips, your lot size and the pip value for that lot size. Understanding this relationship is essential for setting realistic profit targets and stop losses.

For a long (buy) trade, you profit when gold rises and lose when it falls. For a short (sell) trade, you profit when gold falls and lose when it rises. The magnitude of your profit or loss depends entirely on lot size.

P&L = (Exit Price - Entry Price) ÷ 0.01 × Lot Size × $1

For long trades. Reverse the subtraction for short trades.

Why Knowing Your P&L Before You Trade Matters

Professional traders never enter a trade without knowing exactly what they will make or lose at each price level. This discipline separates consistent traders from gamblers.

  • Calculate your exact loss at stop loss before entering — if it exceeds your risk limit, reduce lot size
  • Know your exact profit at each take profit level before the trade begins
  • Factor in spread — typically 3-10 pips on XAU/USD — which reduces net profit on winning trades
  • Track all P&L in a trading journal to identify patterns in your performance over time

Common P&L Mistakes in Gold Trading

  • Ignoring spread — the broker's spread means you start every trade at a small loss
  • Not accounting for swap — overnight positions incur a swap charge that reduces net P&L
  • Comparing pips not dollars — a 50 pip win on 0.01 lots is very different from 50 pips on 1.0 lots
  • Forgetting currency conversion — GBP and EUR account holders need to convert USD profits

Common Questions

Profit & Loss Calculator FAQ

How is profit calculated in XAU/USD?
Profit = (Exit Price - Entry Price) × Lot Size × Contract Size. For a long trade, if gold rises from $4710 to $4730 with 0.1 lots, profit = 20 pips × $0.10 = $2.00.
What is the difference between pips and points in gold trading?
In XAU/USD, a pip is $0.10 and a point is $0.001. Most brokers quote gold to 2 decimal places, so pips are the standard unit of measurement.
How do I calculate gold trading profit in GBP?
Calculate USD profit first then divide by the current GBP/USD exchange rate. If profit is $100 USD and GBP/USD is 1.27, your GBP profit is approximately £78.74.
Does commission affect my P&L on gold trades?
Yes — broker commission and spread both reduce your net profit. Always factor in your broker's spread (typically 3-10 pips on XAU/USD) and any commission when calculating expected P&L.
What is floating P&L vs realised P&L?
Floating P&L is your unrealised profit or loss on an open trade. Realised P&L is locked in once you close the trade. Only realised P&L affects your actual account balance.
