What Is Risk:Reward Ratio?

The risk to reward ratio (R:R) is one of the most fundamental concepts in professional trading. It compares the amount you are risking on a trade — from your entry to your stop loss — versus the amount you aim to make — from your entry to your take profit.

A trade with a 1:2 risk to reward ratio means that for every £1 you risk, you are targeting £2 in profit. This single concept, applied consistently, is what allows traders to be profitable even when they lose more trades than they win.

R:R RatioBreakeven Win RateRequired Edge
1:150%Minimal edge required
1:1.540%Lose 6 in 10 and still profit
1:233.3%Lose 2 in 3 and still profit
1:325%Lose 3 in 4 and still profit

The Expected Value Formula

Expected value tells you the average profit or loss per trade over a large sample size. A positive EV strategy is profitable long-term.

EV = (Win Rate × Reward) — (Loss Rate × Risk)

Example: 55% win rate at 1:2 R:R = (0.55 × 2) — (0.45 × 1) = 0.65R per trade

Why Gold Trade Signals Always Targets 1:2+

Every trade idea sent through our VIP channel is evaluated for R:R before it is sent. We target a minimum of 1:2 on every trade — often higher. This means even if our members only win half their trades, they are consistently profitable over time.

  • All signals include entry, stop loss and multiple take profit levels
  • R:R is calculated based on structural levels — not arbitrary numbers
  • Live training sessions teach members how to identify high R:R setups themselves
  • Weekly performance reports show R:R averages across all published ideas

Every Signal Comes With R:R Pre-Calculated

You never have to assess trade quality alone. Every Gold Trade Signals idea includes the full R:R breakdown so you always know what you are getting into. Join free.

Common R:R Mistakes in Gold Trading

  • Moving your stop loss — widening your stop mid-trade to avoid a loss destroys your R:R and is one of the most damaging habits in trading
  • Taking early profits — closing at TP1 every time prevents you from achieving the R:R you planned and reduces your overall edge
  • Taking trades below 1:1 — any trade where you risk more than you aim to make requires an exceptionally high win rate to be profitable
  • Ignoring structure — placing your take profit at a round number rather than a structural level often means leaving money on the table
Common Questions

Risk:Reward FAQ

What is risk to reward ratio in gold trading?
Risk to reward ratio compares how much you risk on a trade versus how much you aim to make. A 1:2 R:R means risking 1 pip to potentially make 2 pips.
What is a good risk to reward ratio for XAU/USD?
Most professional gold traders target a minimum of 1:1.5 and ideally 1:2 or higher. At 1:2 R:R you only need to win 34% of your trades to be profitable.
What is breakeven win rate?
The breakeven win rate is the minimum percentage of trades you need to win to break even at a given R:R ratio. At 1:2 R:R your breakeven win rate is 33.3%.
What is expected value in trading?
Expected value (EV) is the average amount you can expect to win or lose per trade over time. A positive EV means your strategy is profitable long-term even if individual trades lose.
How does R:R ratio affect profitability?
A higher R:R ratio means you can be profitable even with a lower win rate. At 1:3 R:R you only need to win 25% of trades to break even, giving you much more room for losing trades.
