Margin is the deposit your broker requires to open a leveraged position. It is not a fee — it is collateral held to cover potential losses. When you close a trade, your margin is returned to your free balance minus any profit or loss.
Understanding margin requirements is critical because running out of free margin can trigger a margin call — where your broker automatically closes your positions, often at the worst possible time.
Required Margin = (Lots × 100 oz × Price) ÷ Leverage
Example: 0.1 lots at $4710 with 1:100 = ($4710 × 10) ÷ 100 = $265| Leverage | 0.01 Lots | 0.10 Lots | 1.00 Lots |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:20 | $132.50 | $1,325 | $13,250 |
| 1:100 | $26.50 | $265 | $4,710 |
| 1:500 | $5.30 | $53 | $530 |
