What Is Swap in Gold Trading?

When you hold an XAU/USD position past the daily rollover time — typically 5PM New York time — your broker applies an overnight swap charge. This fee compensates for the cost of financing your leveraged position overnight.

Unlike currency pairs where one currency might pay interest, gold does not generate interest. This means that both long and short XAU/USD positions typically incur a negative swap — you pay to hold regardless of direction.

The Wednesday Triple Swap Explained

On Wednesdays, most brokers apply triple swap to account for the Saturday and Sunday settlement that occurs over the weekend. This means holding a position on Wednesday evening costs three times the normal daily swap rate. For traders holding positions longer term, Wednesday's triple swap is an important cost to factor in.

Total Swap = Lot Size × Swap Rate Per Lot × Number of Nights

Add double the daily swap for Wednesday if triple swap applies

How to Minimise Swap Costs

  • Trade intraday only — close all positions before 5PM New York time to avoid swap entirely
  • Ask your broker about Islamic (swap-free) accounts if you hold positions frequently overnight
  • Factor swap into your take profit calculation — your target must exceed the total swap cost
  • Be particularly aware of holding through Wednesday evenings when triple swap is applied
  • Compare swap rates across brokers before choosing your trading account

Common Questions

Swap Calculator FAQ

What is swap in gold trading?
Swap (also called rollover or overnight fee) is the interest charged or credited when you hold an XAU/USD position past the daily rollover time, typically 5PM New York time.
Is swap positive or negative for XAU/USD?
For most brokers, both long and short XAU/USD positions incur a negative swap — meaning you pay a fee for holding positions overnight. This is because gold does not pay interest like currencies do.
When is swap charged on gold trades?
Swap is charged once per day at rollover time (5PM EST). On Wednesdays, most brokers charge triple swap to account for the weekend settlement period.
How can I avoid swap charges on gold?
You can avoid swap by closing positions before the daily rollover time. Some brokers offer swap-free (Islamic) accounts. Alternatively, only trade intraday and do not hold positions overnight.
How much is typical swap on XAU/USD?
Swap rates vary by broker but typically range from -$2 to -$8 per standard lot per day for long positions, and slightly less negative or occasionally positive for short positions depending on interest rate differentials.
