Trade update: XAUUSD, move stop-loss to entry. It is one of the most common updates we send, and one of the most confusing for a new member. In this article we explain exactly what to do when you see it, how to make the change in MT5 and why it is such a useful habit.
Moving your stop-loss to entry means changing it to the same price you opened the trade at. If you bought gold at a certain level, your new stop-loss sits at that level. Nothing else about the trade changes: the take-profit stays where it is and the position stays open.
In MT5, tap the open trade in your Trade tab, choose Modify, and update the SL field to your entry price. Confirm the change and check that the new level appears on the chart. The whole process takes under a minute, and the team will happily walk you through it the first time if you have never done it.
We usually send this update once a trade has moved a reasonable distance in our favour. If price then comes all the way back, the trade closes around where it started instead of at a loss (spread and slippage aside). What was a risk a few hours ago becomes close to a free trade, while the take-profit remains in play.
The update is a protective step, not a sign that anything has gone wrong. It is one of the ways a trade idea is managed from entry through to exit, and knowing how to act on it quickly is a core skill for anyone following gold ideas. Never done it? Ask in the community and we will show you.
It means changing your stop-loss to the price you opened the trade at. If price comes back, the trade closes around breakeven rather than at a loss, spread and slippage aside.
Open the Trade tab, tap the position, choose Modify, enter the new stop-loss price and confirm. The updated level will show on your chart.
